SDG 7: Affordable and Clean Energy – Al-Quds University’s Contribution

by admsusint

Renewable energy solutions are becoming cheaper, more reliable and more efficient every day. Our current reliance on fossil fuels is unsustainable and harmful to the planet, which is why we have to change the way we produce and consume energy. Implementing these new energy solutions as fast as possible is essential to counter climate change, one of the biggest threats to our own survival.

Goal 7 aims to provide universal access to modern energy, double the improvement in energy efficiency, increase global percentage of renewable energy, promote access to research, technology and investments in clean energy, expand and upgrade energy services for developing countries.

Education in Energy and Engineering Fields: Al-Quds University offers degree programs in energy and engineering disciplines, providing students with the knowledge and skills needed to develop and implement innovative energy solutions. These programs focus on topics such as renewable energy technologies, energy efficiency, smart grids, and energy policy and management.

Research on Clean and Renewable Energy: The university conducts cutting-edge research on clean and renewable energy technologies, such as solar, wind, hydro, and bioenergy. This research contributes to the development of more efficient, cost-effective, and sustainable energy solutions that can help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and promote energy security.

Collaboration with Industry and Stakeholders: Al-Quds University works closely with industry partners to advance clean energy technologies and practices. Through joint research projects, technical assistance, and knowledge sharing, the university helps promote the adoption of renewable energy and energy efficiency measures in the region and beyond.

Sustainable Campus Initiatives: The university is committed to reducing its own environmental footprint and promoting sustainable energy practices on campus. This commitment is demonstrated through the installation of renewable energy systems, such as solar panels, energy-efficient lighting and heating systems, and the implementation of energy conservation measures in campus buildings.

Community Outreach and Capacity Building: Al-Quds University actively engages in community outreach programs that promote awareness about clean energy and energy efficiency. These initiatives involve providing education and training to local communities on sustainable energy practices, such as energy conservation, renewable energy technologies, and energy-efficient building design.

Innovation and Entrepreneurship: The university encourages innovation and entrepreneurship in the clean energy sector, supporting research, development, and commercialization of new technologies and business models. By fostering a culture of innovation, Al-Quds University contributes to the growth of the clean energy industry and the creation of new job opportunities.

Advocacy and Policy Development: Al-Quds University plays a key role in advocating for policies and strategies that promote clean and affordable energy to develop and implement evidence-based policies that support renewable energy, energy efficiency, and sustainable energy access for all.

In summary, Al-Quds University is dedicated to achieving SDG 7 through:

  • Carrying out studies and research for the exploitation of solar energy systems, wind energy and biogas, as well as by raising the efficiency of electrical networks, rationalizing energy consumption, and reducing the emission of toxic gases CO2.
  • 88% of the energy consumed in the university comes from solar cells.
  • Planning future projects for the energy sector in Palestine in cooperation with the concerned authorities, in the field of generation, transmission and distribution of electric power.
  • Work has also been done to develop study programs in the technical fields of renewable energy, as the university offers a Bachelor of Professional in Solar Energy Technology, a Master of Renewable Energy and Sustainability, in addition to establishing and developing specialized laboratories for measurement and examination, and working on preparing specialized applied scientific research.
  • Enhancing training, especially for researchers in this field, and giving priority to research that addresses the problems of the energy sector in Palestine.
