Aligning Career Growth with Collaboration
The traditional promotion system in academia that prioritizes single-field excellence is one of the greatest hindrances for researchers to work in interdisciplinary fields. Therefore, it is very important that universities establish mechanisms that reward and shield researchers from the backlash of ‘leaving’ their primary field.
The IRU Incentive System
Al-Quds University has developed the first system of its kind to ensure that interdisciplinary work is not only recognized but rewarded. Our policy consists of the following:
- Promotional Criteria with Added Weights: Documentation for tenure and promotion evaluations that specify additional or equal weight to interdisciplinary publications and collaborative contributions.
- Internal Seed Grants: Grants classified under “Catalyst Grants” that are exclusively granted for new and high-risk interdisciplinary projects across a minimum of two faculties.
- Role Recognition: Recognition of “Interdisciplinary Project Lead” roles as being the same as significant departmental leadership roles.
- Interdisciplinary Professional Development: Limited Sponsorship for participants of International Conferences on Interdisciplinary Methodologies and Collaborative Leadership.
Overall, the above policies provide a clear and solid career pathway for the faculty, and articulate the University’s intention of encouraging faculty members to focus on the integration and collaboration of their work across disciplines.
